These are the new diffusers we just got in from K. Hall. Such beautiful scents and yes, one of them is called Milk. Such an unusual name for such a pretty fragrance. It is a combination of vanilla, coconut, and creme and is ridiculously calming. The line also contains Shoreline, Moss, Cypress + Cassis, Scarlett, and Washed Cotton.

Very difficult to pick a favorite.

With a very successful career spanning over 20 years, dancing on Broadway, Television, as a Knicks City Dancer, and as a Radio City Rockette, Danielle has degrees in both Dance and Kinesiology from the University of Michigan, and an MFA from NYU Tisch. She has also been the Executive Director of the Local Miss America Pageant, and mentored and trained Miss New York 2009. Currently Danielle is the Head Cheer Coach at Iona College and an Adjunct Professor at Manhattanville College. Danielle dove into yoga after her reconstructive knee surgery in 1998 and has never looked back. She is an E-RYT 500 trained in Bikram, Ashtanga, Hatha, Vinyasa and Iyengar practices. She taught and practiced yoga right up until the very end of both of her pregnancies. Danielle is a strong believer in cross training and that is why you can find her teaching all different styles of classes from cardio to strength training. She is delighted to be teaching at Marmalade!

Strawberries are rich in antioxidants and are a natural source of salicylic acid, plus the seeds are great for exfoliation, making them an ideal ingredient for a facial mask.

Give this simple at home face mask a try if you can bear to spare a few scrumptious strawberries. It smells great too!

Strawberry Face Mask

1/2 cup fresh strawberries

1 egg white

2 tsp honey

To prepare: Blend all ingredients in a blender or food processor until smooth. Store in an air tight container in the fridge. Keeps for up to a week.

To use: After cleansing, spread a tablespoon or two of the mask on your face and neck. Leave on for 20 minutes, then gently rinse with cool water.

Spring Officially Starts on Sunday - Yippee!

I spoke to my father yesterday - who lives in Southern California - he was complaining that it was 'chilly' and he had just turned the heat up. When I asked the temperature he told me it was 70 degrees. WHAT?!? Boy, those Californian's have no idea what cold is like us East Coasters do. Spring officially starts this Sunday - and man, have we earned it! My plans for this weekend are to open up my windows and get rid of that I-have-two-cats-cooked-a-lot-of-chili-this-winter-hibernating-for-the-last-6-months-smell. Congratulations to all of us East Coasters we made it through another winter!

How to Make That Hot Cocoa a Little More Special (wink,wink)

A warm cup of hot cocoa is hard to beat, especially when it's homemade or one of our favorite mixes. But spiked hot cocoa is even better on a cold night. Here are three combinations we're loving right now. Go for a half-ounce of alcohol per cup of cocoa to start, though you may want to ramp it up more depending on your taste (and whether the heat is working in your house...brrr!)

1. The Minty Mocha: Mix each cup of hot cocoa with a quarter cup of freshly brewed coffee (or a single espresso shot) and half an ounce of Kahlua's peppermint mocha liqueur. Garnish each mug with a candy cane (or a mint sprig, if you're fancy.)

2. The Candied Orange: Mix each cup of hot cocoa with a quarter-ounce each of Domaine de Canton ginger liqueur and Cointreau. Top with whipped cream and orange zest.

3. Tipsy Tequila Cocoa: Mix each cup of cocoa with a quarter ounce each of silver tequila and peppermint cinnamon schnapps. (Feel free to tip a little more in there to your taste; this one should be warming.) Inspired by the Ixcacao from Huckleberry Bar in Brooklyn.

No School AGAIN?!?!?

Here are some fun crafts to occupy the kids during this snow day. See post above for how to occupy yourself during these days without school.

SNOWMAN THERMOMETER

What you'll need:

1 jumbo craft stick
White acrylic paint
White and red glitter glue
2" piece of white chenille stem
2 medium blue pom-poms
Wax paper
½ orange toothpick
1 blue toothpick (colored toothpicks are not required, plain will work)
Scrap of material for scarf
Scrap of white paper for sign
Black marker
White craft glue
Glue stick
Scissors

How to make it:

Paint craft stick white and let dry. Repeat if needed.
Make the snowman face by using a black marker to draw on eyes, eyebrows, and a mouth. Glue the orange toothpick piece between the eyes and the mouth.
Place a piece of wax paper on the work surface. Glue the blue toothpick to the back of the craft stick, about 2.5" down from the top. Leave about 2/3 of the toothpick visible. Cut a piece of white paper, about 2"x3" (approximately) and fold in half. On one half, use a black marker to write "BRRR!" Line the inside with a glue stick and fold it around the blue toothpick to create the sign.
Glue a piece of scrap material around the neck area to create a scarf.
Bend the chenille so that it is rounded and fits around the top of the craft stick. This is the band for your ear muffs. Glue in place. Trim a little off the side of a pom-pom (to make one side flatter) and glue to the side of the craft stick where the chenille ends. Repeat on the other side.
Starting at the bottom of the craft stick, use the red glitter glue to create a "ball" of mercury, then draw a line halfway up the stick.
Switch to the white glitter glue and continue up the craft stick until you reach the scarf. Let glitter glue dry, this will take several hours.
Use a fine tip black marker to add dashes and numbers to your thermometer, including the Fahrenheit and Celcius symbols (F and C).

Tips:

Jumbo craft sticks are available at discount department stores and craft supply stores.
Hint: Start your number 0 where the red and white meet, then fill in remaining numbers from there.
Glitter glue takes several hours to dry, so be sure and plan accordingly.

HAND PRINT WINTER TREE

What you'll need:

1 sheet light blue construction paper

1 sheet white copy paper

Brown acrylic craft paint

Glue stick

Scissors

3 tablespoons granulated sugar

How to make it:

Lay white paper sideways (landscape) and cut the paper in half using a curvy cut. Place paper across the light blue construction paper. Use the glue stick to attach it to the bottom third of the blue paper. Use scissors to trim off any excess white paper.

Paint child's palm and fingers with brown paint. Have child spread out his/her fingers then press his/her palm and fingers down onto the paper. Wash off child's hand.

Use finger to paint on a "tree trunk" under the palm print.

Use the glue stick to apply glue to the fingers (branches) and snow (white paper). Sprinkle all glued areas with granulated sugar. Carefully lift paper and tap off excess sugar over the sink or a piece of wax paper.

Use glue stick to draw dots or small circles onto the blue paper, sprinkle with sugar again and tap off excess.

Tips:

Construction paper is perfect for impromptu craft projects.

Poster paint will work in place of acrylic craft paint.

Be sure to wash child's hand with soap and water before continuing with the project so that the paint will come off easily.

SALT DOUGH ICE SKATES

What you'll need:

2 tablespoons flour

1 tablespoon salt

1 tablespoon water

Bowl

Spoon

Cookie sheet

Parchment paper (optional)

½ silver chenille stem

Toothpick

Craft knife

Black and white acrylic paint

Paintbrush

10 miniature pom-poms

2 medium pom-poms

White craft glue

24" thin ribbon

How to make it:

Mix flour, salt and water together in a bowl using a spoon until it forms a pliable dough. Roll the dough into a ball, and then split the dough in half.

Using the palm of your hand, roll the dough pieces back and forth across the parchment paper to form two logs, approximately 4 inches long. Bend each one into a rounded "L" shape.

Use your finger to gently flatten the "L" shapes. Shape the heel, the toe, and the top of the skate by shaping with your fingers.

Cut the ½ chenille stem in half. Bend each one so that each end is pointed up. Gently poke the pointed ends into the bottom of the skate to create the blade.

Use a toothpick to poke a hole near the top of the skate. Use a circular motion to make the hole big enough to poke a piece of ribbon through. Be sure you don't make the hole too close to the top or it might break through.

Use a craft knife to gently press lace marks into the skates.

Lift the parchment paper and place it onto your cookie sheet. Bake the skates at 250 Fahrenheit for 2.5 hours. Let cool before continuing to the next step.

Paint the skates white and let dry.

Use a toothpick dipped in black paint to fill in the shoe lace lines.

Use white craft glue to attach five miniature pom-poms to the top of each skate.

Also attach one medium pom-pom to the top of the toe on each skate. Let dry.

Cut thin ribbon in half. Take one half and fold it over once, the ends should be touching each other. Push the looped end through the hole from the back of the skate. Bring the open ends up over the skate and insert into the loop, then gently pull to tighten.

Place the skates side by side on the work surface. Move one skate a bit lower than the other and tie the two ribbons together.

Tips:

Salt dough does not have to be baked; it can be left to dry overnight.

To make larger batches of salt dough, just remember the formula of 2 parts flour, 1 part salt and 1 part water.

Use cookie cutter to create fun salt dough creatures!

Since I'm not not known as one who can dazzle anyone with my kitchen skills....I've settled on this supposed easy appetizer for the New Year's Party I'm attending this year. Actually, if you must know my secrets, as long as you plop these puppies on a serious looking tray, like this silver one here, and throw those little poppy seeds on the little buggers, you're home free. No would dare question the appropriateness of anything on a silver tray with poppy seeds. (Hopefully they'll have quite a bit of other food, who knows how these will turn out).

PIGS IN A BLANKET

2 sheet(s) frozen pastry dough, thawed

12 all-beef hot dogs

1 large egg

1/4 teaspoon(s) salt

Poppy seeds, for garnish

Directions

Preheat oven to 425°F. On a lightly floured surface, roll 1 puff pastry dough sheet into a 12- by 14-inch rectangle. Cut rectangle in half lengthwise, then cut each half into 3 equal pieces for a total of 6 pastry pieces. Repeat with second pastry.

Pat hot dogs dry with paper towels and pierce each several times with a fork. In a small bowl, whisk together egg and salt for egg wash. Roll each hot dog in 1 puff pastry piece, then seal with some egg wash.

Place pastry-wrapped hot dogs on parchment-lined baking sheets and lightly brush with remaining egg wash; sprinkle with poppy seeds. Bake until puffed and golden, about 20 minutes. Slice each pastry-wrapped hot dog into 5 sections and serve warm with spicy mustard, if desired.

Winter Ballet & Art Class Registration Open

We're just finishing up our Fall sessions of ballet and what a season it was. We had so many little ballerinas that every day there was class the store was a sea of pink tulle as they waited for the studio door to open to let them in. These little girls learned so much! Every time they would came down the stairs from our loft after class they would show me one of the moves they had just learned, and I have to say, I felt like the Grinch when his heart grew three sizes. We opened this studio because we felt it would fill a void in the town for young kids, but in actuality it did much more than that. I've seen friendships forged between girls that never would have met, I've seen shy little ones come out of their shells, but most importantly I've seen smiles that stretch from ear to ear and that is priceless.

Registration for our Winter Session began yesterday. The session will run from January 3rd through April 2nd. We've got lots of new things planned as well as expanded classes. We've added more Mommy + Me classes which we now call "ME, YOU, AND THE TUTU" in the hopes of grabbing some dads out there as well as moms, and we've added a CRAFTY ARTSY ART CLASS where we'll be doing all kinds of unique and awesome things. I'm going to make a blanket statement here, and I don't think I'm far off. Yesterday in the store, every person I worked with was in complete holiday denial mode. Everyone is still just coming off Halloween and just beginning to look towards Thanksgiving, but lurking less than one week after that is the start of Hanukkah. Can you believe it?! And then a mere 24 days after that is Christmas. It's frightening actually. Am I getting old, or is the calendar just moving faster, maybe it's just that I'm in retail? I'm not sure exactly what it is but I know I'm not alone in feeling like this year the holidays are looming as opposed to being anticipated. But you know what? It is what it is, so let's shake off our denial and slight curmudgeoness and get with the holiday spirit. Come on, at least there will be cocktails, right, and a little time off work? But then you balance that with in-laws and the pressure of getting the perfect gift and yikes we're right back to that looming, curmudgeony feeling. Oh well, can't help you much on the in-laws front, but I definitely can help you out in the perfect gift category. So, don't worry, we've got you covered this year for the oh-so-early Hanukkah season, here's a little sampling.

NEW BALLET CLASSES FOR KIDS IN OUR UPSTAIRS LOFT

Starting in two weeks we are offering a hip version of story time ballet. We offer classes for 3 and 4 year olds that will focus on learning a few steps as well as a sprinkling of some "bonjours" and such each week. The lesson will be surrounded by a story line which will help the little ones in identifying the moves they will be learning as well as giving them a context with which to use their new talents.

For our 5 and 6 year olds we will offer a slightly higher lever of an introduction to ballet technique, however, this class also will be based on a hip and current story line to help keep their interest and again give them context with which to use their new talents.

Our overall goal is to keep these classes fast paced and fun for the kids, while making sure they are learning something so that you are getting your dollars worth from us. We want these kids leaving our classes smiling from ear to ear and eager to return the next week. We have all kinds of fun things planned, also we have a tutu program that will keep your child engaged in what goes on each week...........we'll share those details when you register.

Now, we wouldn't want you parents to think we forgot you, so for all parents of enrolled kids you will receive our special Studio Marmalade card which entitles you to a discount in our gift store for the length of your enrollment. Hey, who else does that???? That's right, only Marmalade.

It's All In The Details...........

So I'm in the middle of a crazy work day with customers telling me I don't have enough of this and the other customers telling me I have too much of that, when an urgent phone call comes in from my daughter saying.......MOMMYMOMMYYOUHAVETOCALLRIGHTNOWBEFORESOMEONEELSEGETSTHECAT!!! In our world that should read as, "Mommy, Mommy, you have to call right now before someone else gets the cat." It turns out that my daughter's friend, Sabrina, had just adopted a 3 month old kitten. Sabrina was having a birthday party in a few weeks and the first person to rsvp got to "sponsor" the kitten. So my daughter was begging me to drop everything and to please call and rsvp to this party before anyone else did. Now, I love a little 3 month old kitten as much as the next person, and when I heard the word "sponsor" to me that meant taking care from afar, mentoring, perhaps actually spending bits and pieces of time together, so that all sounded good to me so without asking any additional questions I stopped what I was doing and made the call.

Sabrina's mother answered by saying, "Ha, I knew it would be you that called first, I'm so glad, but I can't talk right now I'm just walking into my office I'll call you later and give you all the details." Details??? I remember thinking, what kinds of details are needed to spend a little bit of time with a kitty, oh well, whatever. So I went about my day and then later that evening Sabrina's mom calls me and says , "okay, let me give you all the dates.....we will be leaving on the 6th and returning on the 16th." Wondering why the heck she was telling me this, I replied, "oh that's nice, where will you be going?" She told me where they were headed off to and then added the tiny detail of, "oh, so we'll drop the cat off to you the morning of the 6th." WHAT?!?! When my daughter told me we were sponsoring a cat I had no idea that meant babysitting the little codger for 10 days. I, myself would be moving the week prior to that, as well as the fact that I already have two cats of my own and who knew if they would all get along. But, I chalked the whole thing up as my fault and made a huge mental note that when a 12 yr old is asking for something that involves calling someone else's mother it may be wise to get a LOT more details first.

So, today we are on our last day with little Allegra, and as funny as it would be to tell you all the mishaps of this little kitty I'll just leave you with these few photos. This is really the cutest thing I've ever seen, and this morning as I was contemplating how much I was going to miss this little being and maybe it was time to get a new little kitty ourselves again, Allegra was nice enough to pee directly on my brand new pillow, thus reminding me that two cats is already more than enough for this household.

Okay, this landed in my inbox today. I don't know exactly why but I was very offended. Maybe because I'm sitting here with the worst head cold in the history of head colds and feel as if I'm 110 years old because I am so achy and this is the third cold I've had in the last 6 weeks so I'm pretty darn crabby on top of everything. Then to receive an ad that somehow tied me to a demographic for women that need leak protection built right into their panties made this tired old body of mine feel a thousand times worse.

Or more importantly, maybe it was so offensive because, seriously, look at this woman's rear end in the ad........if you are at the age/place in life where you need this type of product, trust me, your a** is not going to resemble anything like this shot.

I don't know if you're feeling it too, but most of the people I've run across lately seem to be in a mood where they have a desire to re-create themselves, or maybe a better way to say it is not so much to RE-create, but to unearth oneself by discovering some hidden aspects of their personality. Maybe it's due to the beginning of spring time in the air, or maybe it's a result of how we all took a hard look at our lives as we came through this recession. Become a better baker......love this site for simple, down to earth baking wisdom.
